The paper is based on three short visits of less than three months between 2000 and 2003 to the village of Elah (pseudonym) in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, a village in which I lived for almost two years between 1991 and 1992. My field research at that time concentrated on medical anthropology, particularly the interface of the national health system with indigenous healing practices and the pluralistic nature of health procurement. I was interested in the power relations of practitioners and villagers' choices in their access to health procurement. My present focus is of general observations and impressions gained through conversations and hanging out with village friends and officials known to me from previous visits to the village. Of course, my observations are based on changes in the ten-year period since I lived there (during the New Order period), as well as on those that have occurred in the last four years since the reformasi (Post-New Order).
